SolidWater is a material that absorbs a 115 times its own mass in water, only to slowly release it to plants. This enables plants to survive three times longer without irrigation. Our goal with this material is to combat desertification. This is a global climate phenomenon where land, be it agricultural or natural heritage, degrades to the point of no longer being able to sustain plant life. Visible results are possible with only 10 grams per square meter. By using a specially designed dispersal container that fits large NATO cargo planes, we are able to cover large swathes of land. For example, with a single flight of a fully loaded C-130 Hercules, we would be able to mitigate drought in an area of up to 19 hectares.
By mitigating the consequences of drought, we enable soil to permanently restore itself far quicker than normally possible. This means that, in time, degraded soil becomes available for agriculture or forestry where it otherwise would not.
