Water scarcity is an increasingly pressing challenge. In many parts of the world, available freshwater resources are predicted to decrease overall due to the effects of climate change, while demand is predicted to rise. Research shows that behavior change must be part of the solution to reduce overall water demand.
Aguardio’s mission is simple – to reduce water and energy consumption by supporting, improving and developing sustainable behavior. Our solution aims to motivate people to reduce their time under the shower by at least one minute.
Aguardio is a physical device designed to guide people in a more sustainable direction. Installed in the bathroom, Aguardio facilitates changes in shower behavior with the aim to reduce water and energy consumption.
Aguardio is a plug&play solution and consist of two devices: a sensor placed at the ceiling in the shower cabinet, and a display placed on the wall in the shower cabinet. The Aguardio sensor collects data on shower behavior via two individual sensors registering movement and sound. Also, data on humidity and temperature are collected and uploaded to a cloud via Wi-Fi.
The data on movement and sound are automatically transmitted to the Aguardio display as soon as the shower begins showing bath length. This means, that the display timer stops if water is turned off e.g. while shampooing, and the total bath length is shown when the user leaves the shower cabinet. Pilot test shows, that Aguardio can reduce the shower time by 20 percent per shower.
Though, it is not a prerequisite for use of Aguardio, all data can be accessed via web access or app. Here it is possible to identify specific shower patterns, e.g. to what extent the user let water run before entering the shower, or if the user over time reduces shower time. Data on humidity and temperature are also accessible via the app. All data can be used both for individual tracking, for operational optimization and for gamification/benchmark – all depending on who the user is: individuals or organizations.
Country case UK
17 billion litres of water goes in to the UK mains water supply every day, serving the needs of more than 60 million consumers across UK households and businesses. On average, each brit uses 150 litres each day equals to 9 billion lites of water.
If 60 million consumers reduce the time under the shower (10 litres/minute) with one-minute pr. day, the daily water usage savings would be 600 million or 7% of the average UK households daily water consumption.
As hot water is heated with mainly natural gas in the UK, the hot water reductions means 21.648 MWh in energy savings or 4.400 tons CO2 emission reduction per day.
With 240,000 hotel nights in UK alone pr. day, a 1 minute reduction in shower time will equals to 2,4 millions litres of water saved daily. The energy reduction would be 86,6 MWh and CO2 emission reduction would be minimum 14 tons CO2 emission reduction.
Why: each person will save more than 10 litres of hot water and save eno ugh energy to run a 60-watt light bulb for 6 hours.
Aguardio helps and supports hotels address United Nations Sustainable Development Goals number 6 “Clean water and sanitation”, number 12 “Responsible consumption and production” & number 13 “Climate action” by saving water, energy and reduce wastewater discharge.
